HOW TO EXTRACT PALM OIL FROM OIL PALM TREE

From our last post,we talked about oil palm tree,how it is grown,the different usefulness and how it is being used in the agricultural industries. Now we will be talking extensively on how palm oil is being extracted from the oil palm tree.

 

As we have said that Palm oil is an important source of food and a major source of lipid(Fat). Steady increase in the world population increases the demand for palm oil as an important source of edible oils and fats and almost 90% of the world palm oil production is traded as edible oils and fats. There are different processes in which palm oil can be extracted from oil palm trees. The two main processes are the wet process and the dry process.

The wet process is the most common way of extracting palm oil from the oil palm tree. These processes involves the following steps:

1. The oil palm fruit is harvested from the tree.

2. The fruit is crushed to release the palm oil and palm kernel.

3. The palm oil and palm kernel are separated.

4. The palm oil is clarified to remove impurities.

5. The palm oil is refined to create the final product.

I will be going into details on the wet process; First, let’s talk about harvesting the oil palm fruit. This is usually done by hand, as it’s a delicate process that requires careful handling of the fruit.

Local way of extracting palm oil

Next, the fruit is crushed to release the palm oil and palm kernel. This is done using a press or mill. Once the oil and kernel are separated, the palm oil goes through a clarification process to remove any impurities. This is done using a centrifuge or filter. Finally, the palm oil is refined to create the finished product.
