COCOA BEAN

COCO BEAN

The cocoa bean is the seed of the cocoa tree (theobroma cacao). Once the beans have been fermented and dried, they can be processed to produce a variety of products.

These products include: Cocoa butter – Cocoa butter is used in the manufacture of chocolate. It is also widely used in cosmetic products such as moisturizing creams and soaps.

A typical pod contains 30 to 40 beans and there are about 30 pods per tree; approximately 400 dried beans are required to make one pound of cocoa. Mostly we have two periods of peak production per year: A main harvest, and a smaller harvest. You can plant about 1,000 to 1,600 seedlings per hectare.

Farms run on subsistence level (less than 2 hectare (5 acres) of land) yield an average of just 600-800 kg per year.

Meanwhile, commercially with less than 2 hectare (5 acres) of land yield 1,300kg -1620kg per year.

There are many pre-owned cocoa farms in Nigeria. That is, a farm full of cocoa trees owned by someone before his/her death. Most of these ready-made farms face challenges after the death of the real owner due to some reason.

For example, farmers in the 90s usually marry many wives with the aim of birthing many children. Why do they do this? It is because they need more hands to work on the piece of land to make cultivation easier.

In those days, a man can marry as many wives as possible, some have up to 9 wives while some even have more. Some children are more than 35, some have up to 70 children and even more. Crazy right?

The piece of land farmers had back then are large in size because nobody measured it for them then according to history. Are you curious? You want to know how they own them.

During my research, I asked this question too. I was told there are many methods of owning a land in the early 90s. I don’t want to bore you with many talk but I will tell you few.
